5 Ways to Build Links to Your Affiliate Site in 2013

We just started 2013, and and the year isn’t getting any longer. I don’t know about everyone else, but I am certainly excited to see what 2013 has to offer. Hopefully nothing but good things are coming, but there are certain to be many changes. Especially when it comes to the online world and how we interact.

Marketing is a difficult subject to keep track of. SEO changes in subtle little ways all the time, and link building is even harder to put your finger on. How many of the strategies that were once viable are really worth while today? How can we build affiliate links using effective methods now that the game has changed so much since 2009, and is now sure to change even more?

Unlike many other niches, I would say that link building isn’t something with predictable trends. Even SEO in and of itself is hard to comment on until the changes have already been made. Which is why I think the best bet is to assume 2013 affiliate link building tactics will be more or less the same.

Here are five link building strategies to use with your affiliates in the new year that should be worth your time.

1. Guest Posters
This is going to be your bread and butter. There is just no better way to build long lasting, powerful links, especially with an affiliate, than guest posting between yourself. Many blogs will have writer exchanges, which will let both sides tap into the audience already built on the other site. Then, you have the potential increase for syndication, doubling your likelihood of being seen by a site that will want to repost the article with full credit. Or even just reference something in your post and so link back to you. That taps into further audiences, and so on. Never underestimate the staying power of this approach. Just think of how many times you link within your own blog. Other guest posters are likely to do the same.

2. Keep Your Finger On The Pulse
Trending topics will ultimately build links for anyone, affiliates included. Sure, they are often times fleeting. But a single trending meme can gain exposure for months. Sometimes, in the cases of memes that just won’t die, even longer. Topics related to ongoing stories in the media are the same way. Remember the Tiger Woods infidelity scandal? It just seemed to go on and on, and so remained a trending topic on the web for ages. It feels a little sleazy, but focusing on what is popular, at least in part of your campaign, builds links fast and consistently.

3. Use News Syndication
That brings us to the topic of regular trending topics. News stories have their own little place in search engine rankings that make them much more effective in catching attention that other posts. But more than that, they are more likely to be shared and to gain a lot of focus from multiple sources, including through social media. Posting on a site that will gain news syndication is a great tactic for building links. Especially if you get hold of a story before your affiliate, and they link to you for more details.

4. Post On Directories
How is it possible that people are still ignoring the power of the modern day directory? Sure, such a site has a bad reputation from the earlier days of the web. But it isn’t like it used to be, with endless sites listed like a phone book. Now we have sites like Dirjournal. All of which have a huge daily user tally that are eager to share, will follow links back to your site and share anything else of interest they find. If you are lucky enough to have a post go hot on one of these sites, you will see a huge benefit.

5. Build Your Authority With Reviews
Both you and your affiliate should be using review sites to the best of your ability. Amazon is probably your biggest tool in this regard. You can set up an account, leave insightful and knowledgeable reviews and build yourself up as an authority. Provide a link to your website associated with your account, focus on products related to your niche and watch the impact it has. You can also use question sites like Quora and even Yahoo Answers. Though Quora tends to be more professional. If you are seen as an expert, your content is more likely to gain a link. For technology niche, TekSocial is your best bet.

There are a lot of things you can do for link building. But not all of them will create quality links, especially where affiliates are involved, and that makes all the difference in the world. Don’t waste your time on outdated strategies that won’t work. Not only are they a waste of time, but they make both you and your affiliate site look bad.
